Got an interview
by LouBelle inas some of you know, i had no job last year, then finally got something in an industry that i know nothing about.
the environment and people haven't been the best, but i had to stick it out and hope that things would improve.
i have kept my eye and ears open for opportunities more in my field of expertise - which is print advertising.. i sent through my cv for a job i saw advertised in the newspaper for an advertising sales rep - applied and now i have an interview to go too tomorrow.. i've learnt not to get my hopes up - i am glad for the interview and i hope it goes well..

JW 'Scriptural Divorce' -v- Muslim 'Sharia Divorce'
by Joe Grundy ini just read this bbc article about sharia divorce in cases of domestic violence:.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-22044724.
the issues raised seemed very similar to me to what jws teach about 'scriptural divorce' in these circumstances.. misogynistic (of course), dangerous and despicable..

Well, shamelessly bumping my own thread, I found this an interesting comparison.
'Thinkers' amongst us may find it interesting too.

(I never was a dub).
They called at my house last week, which was a bit of a surprise because I thought I might have been marked down on FS records as 'argumentative' or 'not worth the effort'.
When they call, there are times when I'm in the mood for (and it's convenient) a discussion and I'm happy to invite them in for a cup of tea and spend time with them. (We may never get to know the results of these discussions).
Other times, it's just not convenient or I'm not in the mood - as in 'why should I waste my time and energy when it's as much use as banging my head against a brick wall?'.
But there's another reaction, and I seem to be thinking of this more often - and I've seen it discussed here on JWN. It's something like 'Do I really want to shake their happiness, or at least their settled life, by provoking them to question their religion?'.
My latest dub callers were senior citizens (maybe husband and wife), 'beige' in dress and personality, if you know what I mean. They both had almost innocent smiles. I told them fairly quickly that I knew who they were, that I wasn't interested but commended them for their efforts. I just could not be nasty to them, nor even politely challenge their teachings.
I was surprised (I've not had this response before) when the man said 'Well, thank you for being polite to us', they both gave a nice but weary genuine smile, and I got the impression that they were trudging their weary way through FS. Who am I to challenge them at this stage in their lives? Maybe WTBTS is the only thing they have to hold on to.

Just Shows What Religion Can Do
by Joe Grundy ina child rape victim is sentenced to 100 lashes.. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-21595814.
i don't know about you, i'm an atheist, but i cannot accept that any religion can justify this inhumane, brutal, wicked treatment of a child victim of rape.. there is no excuse for this behaviour on the part of a supposedly civilsed government.
it has fuck all to do with religion, it has all to do with humanity and being a 'human being'.. i have written to my mp and hope to follow this up through the un charter on childrens' rights.. anyone here booked a 'maldives luxury holiday'?.

This seems to me nothing more or less than state-initiated child abuse.
It has nothing to do with religion or anything else.
As a human being, and as a father of a daughter who was the victim of a teenage rape, this offends me and I protest it.

The lack of reaction to this story is interesting - and discouraging.

I challenged a Dub out in service
by LisaRose ini was sitting in my car, finishing an egg mcmuffin before going to the grocery store when i noticed a dubbie going around talking to people in the parking lot.
i thought the chances were good she would approach me, and i decided i was going to do more than decline to take the pamphlet.. after i verified she was a jw, i said that i was a former member.
i said "do you know what the awake said in 1969?

(I never was a dub).
Yesterday they called at my door. A guy in his 70s, a lady in her 60s. I was suffering from the flu and I really was not in the mood, and I was ready to wade in.
But - they were polite and were smiling and looked happy - and do you know what? I asked myself 'Do I really want to say things that might destroy - for them - what is the basis of their lives?
So I didn't. I smiled and said 'no thanks' and they smiled and said 'thanks for the smile and being polite' and they moved on.
They are not my responsibilty and to be honest if at their stage in life they want to cling to their craziness but it makes them happy, well, so be it.
